Little Dragon Soup

Herbal Medicine, Score, Experimental Music
Original version commissioned by Ting Shuo Hear Say
2019

The dragon submerges into turbulent waves to ease troubled waters. The dragon as cinnamon twigs, as ephedra, as peony root, as dried ginger, as asarum, schizandra, penillia and a dash of honey-fried licorice. An aromatic recipe that is at the same time mythological, medicinal, and revealing of a cosmological order, and in this world, a performative score is vivid, ambiguous yet tangible, constantly changing, guided by a calculation of botanical powers, a dynamic design to restore estranged morality, to qualm an emotional flooding in the lungs, to shudder the sorrow that sprouts in stagnated waters, to keep dexterity and flow and mobility of life. A view of the body, in which forms are implicitly inferred to by relationships, resonates with a specific kind of expanded listening first introduced to me by a Chinese medicine shop owner, who offers poetry as his preferred form of remedy after intuited reading of one’s emotional and physical body. A key term here is wen (聞), a rather open sensory concept that is fundamental in traditional clinical practices—to smell, to hear, to intuit, to catch wind of. Little dragon soup is an exercise of abstract scoring, sound, and kinetics that speak to the body as a micro-universe.

Clear Waters, Green Mountains, Mountains of Gold and Silver

Earth, Fire, Plants, Scores, Experimental Music
2019

This project is informed by my residency in Yunnan where I observed the process of “green developments” as initiated by the state as well as by local farmer efforts. “Green development” strives to create new natural systems to replace old ones. The structural rifts generated in this process are often obscure yet deeply affect society, ecology, culture and even cosmology. Cheung’s work is not a direct answer to the structural rifts of society, but regards these point of change as opportunities to create a new cosmology. Cheung has worked alongside loca l shamans to develop an organic form of writing through her interactions with th causal chain of plant-medicine-herb-body-nature-society.Clear Waters, Green Mountains, Mountains of Gold and Silver is a “written” landscape that is best viewed while walking. This landscape has evolved from her research on botanicals and herbal medicines; it is an invented ideographic script system that engages indialogue with the Naxi Dongba script. Cheung’s other work, Fertility, Economy, and Power, uses 37 fables to explor the conflicting fields of ethnicity, culture, tourism, economy, and land fertility. These landscapes are counterpoints to those in Clear Waters, Green Mountains, Mountains of Gold and Silver, and begin with the fable of the cycle of life and death, collected by the artist in Yunnan’s Lashihai region. &#38;nbsp;The artwork’s resemblance to fable problematizes the notion of fable as a “prehistorical” narrative mode. Through her field work, Cheung points out that fableis actually something that arises when the ecological
cycle is drastically thrown out ofbalance.

‘On days that we couldn't go out, I would sit on the floor, looking out the windows. They are rose- coloured from layers of heavy film pressed between layers of thick glass to keep us safe. Any landscape would look romantic through that tint. But our view of the river was blocked by an abandoned waste-treatment plant; my gaze could only trace the curves of rusty steel pipes that carried a river of human faeces from the city to the plant underneath the old public park, where it looped round and round in something like a giant robot’s intestines. But that flow stopped a long time ago...’Artists Xia Lin,&#38;nbsp; Sheryl Cheung and Liam Morgan take us on a journey that meditates on the natural environs and then a haptic chamber of light-, film-, sonic- and plant- installation. A reflection on days past, a dwelling on the uncertain present, an intimation into a physically-distant yet familiar future.「這些需閉門以策安全的日子，我會坐在地板上，透過厚重的玫瑰色玻璃窗向外望，任何景色都能這樣被染得浪漫。

“A work combining sound and hand-painting in Venom-Anti-Venom to introduce a series of interactions between medicine, Chinese herbal practices , the human body, nature and society. The work was inspired by the devotion of Naga in Tahiland which resonates with the artist’s research on the relationships between Chinese legends of the dragon, compedia of Chinese merdicinal herbs and spirituality. The Naga spirits believe that the following rivers in nature are one with the internal rivers that flow within all organisms, wehether blood, bile, phlegm, pus, seat, fat, tears, savlia, urine..etc. which must flow freeely or face collaspe if circulationand balance cannot be achieved.”

	Moon TidesPlant, Sensors, Experimental Music
2017

“Moon Tides” is a multi-part project that explores the persistance for life in a plant and human. What is the drive that motivates us to prosper, to bloom, to preservere in this life of becoming? How can we sonically interpret this striving as a score of our lives?

The idea of transbody is explored in Moon Tides I: Sonic Union, a ritualistic performance in which a plant and a human are united in a shared narrative of vulnerability and weakness. Internal sounds from the human and plant, such as breathing, digestion, breaking bones and branches and electromagnetic bio-feedback are used in a musical experience to create one sonic field of bio-rhythms.

In this performance, the narrative of vulnerability and sadness reflects upon a general correlation between power and emotions. How does the energy of life embody a certain affective politics based on our vision of life affirming goodnesses? According to Spinoza, Joy and sadness are considered two poles of the emotional scale that determine the range of the vital melodic line; joy increases one’s power to act and persist in life; sadness diminishes one’s level of power.

“Let us begin with a general mythology of sound. Imagine the most elemental technology in the world--the essence of life--the animating power that runs through all living things. This power is an intangible material with universal potential that suggests a shared disposition between all that appears to be separate. Like wind, it flows through different internal and external worlds, making the inner and outer one of the same. The ability for this power to connect different entities, spaces, and time gives it a narrating quality, bringing together different relations, changes and patterns to assemble a perspective of the world that differs from histories based on externality.” --Excerpt from Cosmopolitics of Sounds (2018)

&#60;img width="960" height="635" width_o="960" height_o="635" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/204ca5b12768134dadf7391540fdb036591ad621027a96042bd76da6a362bd18/3_960_960.jpg" data-mid="91926017" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/960/i/204ca5b12768134dadf7391540fdb036591ad621027a96042bd76da6a362bd18/3_960_960.jpg" /&#62;</description>

<description>Seven Bodies and the Talking Sea
Post-Workshop Letter
Sheryl Cheung

[Tiger Mountain, Taipei] During our last iteration of meeting online, I am traveling up a mountain, the cellphone in my hand reflects the sunlight that peaks through the tree leaves, between the screen and the actual world, the bright surface of phantom faces discussing ideas about void, I lose track of my direction and where my feet is taking me. I am trying out another form of mobility amidst the many limitations to move, to move in parallel between surfaces allowing reflections to mangle, and perhaps, in certain moments, mirrors are able to bend their silvery torsos. This has been a year of creating spaces within crevices, curling inwards, inner climate change, she said, “sense your underskin, it’s like mist.” The unconscious emotional weight that water carries, rippling with the stylized flames in a Buddhist mural, depicting the fiery roar of the dragon serpent frozen in time. There is emptiness between the ripples, a null space between every glare, to situate freedom within this blank, is a choice to say no, and a refusal of calculation, a naturalized rhythm, A’s affirming metronome replaces my heartbeat, tik, tik, tik, tik.
Our ventilation is clogged by a squirrel making its winter nest, in a bundle of twigs and industrial scraps, the squirrel digs into the hollow frame instinctively trying to make more room itself. The idea of re-embodying in a time when our bodies are so disjointed, to shapeshift by leaving every hindrance of doubt behind.

In the Open Sea, I arrive at a talking boulder and a talking tree, and a man brushing off fallen leaves. To acquire the ability to listen, he says, one must cultivate a deep connection with the cosmic, aerial energy, and tune in to its way of moving. To breathe with, to project one’s spirit with the marrow of sun and moon, to warm with low fire the golden egg of the moon and cook with herbal dynamics of anti-covid tea. Heaven does not speak, it does not herd, but you can tune in for a different kind of inner listening for an immersion with the naturalized divine.

Scoring of Anti Covid Tea
During this pandemic,&#38;nbsp;the relevance of alternative covid remedies have been well pronounced&#38;nbsp;in the form of herbal medicine, grandma’s recipes and conspiracy theories. These propositions, altogether disregarded as covid myths, are dismissed as unscientific and dangerous. In tiny circles, I begin to question the the merit of what we call myths today, and how a reconsideration of myth and medicine can encourage a renegotiating of our relationship with our surroundings and a reopening of the possibilities to reimagine a shift in the way we live and relate to the world when we come out of this pandemic.

Scoring to me is a process of exploring the performative potential in materiality. I look for states of trembling, as the forming of clusters rely on chance. I move elements around until they make noise in my head, noise that makes time bend, diffract.

In this residency, traversing different seas, I’ve gathered the breath of seven bodies and through workshop, attempted at attuning inner climates through a screen-based performance format. How do you mediate an affective action through the internet? It is more than audio and visual loss, it is dealing with another kind of body, the digital phenological body,&#38;nbsp; how it senses and feels. In a time when our connections are dominated by webcam pixels, how can sound, light and poetry channel an immersive session of affection. Working with poems by Taoist Immortal Sister Sun Bu-er, recipes of Anti-Covid Tea, I work towards a web-performance to offer strength in today’s state of stagnated waters.&#38;nbsp;

<description>SHERYL CHEUNGSheryl Cheung experiments with the idea of the body as an instrument that is continually played by affects. Like an open, metabolic body, her sound palette is vulnerable and harsh at the same time. Sheryl works between experimental music, abstract scoring and writing to explore a materialist understanding of power, emotion and moral order. Her recent research focuses on sound and medicine through the perspective of Chinese ontology.Sheryl earned her Master of Arts from University of Manchester (2009) and her Bachelors of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute (2005). She has held supported residencies, workshops and research projects in China, UK, Thailand, Korea and Taiwan. Her work, performances and collaborative projects have been shown at Flaneur Festival 2019, Bangkok Biennial 2018, Taipei Biennial 2018, Asian Meeting Festival, Somerset House studios, Osmosis Festival and Chronus Art Center, among others. Sheryl is a co-founder of lololol.net, an art project that is currently exploring Taoist-informed mind and body technologies.
